Ingrid Goes West is a comedy-drama film that tells you how your mental and social lives are affected by social media. Ingrid Thorburn is a mentally unstable woman who went to Los Angeles to take advantage of her deceased mother's inheritance and reclaim her social status because she crashed her friend's wedding because she wasn't invited and became friends with Taylor Sloane, the Instagram influencer. and it was a perfect opportunity for her to get more exposure. She has tried many possible ways just to get closer to Taylor and become friends with her including kidnapping Taylor's dog, lying numerous times and after being discovered by Taylor's brother, Nicky, that she's obsessed with Taylor, she kidnaps Nicky and terrorizes him. And when Nicky had told Taylor about the ‘accident' she stopped being in contact with Ingrid and that crushes Ingrid's mental health. Later she attempted suicide by overdosing pills thankfully her boyfriend discovered her through a video that she posted with a hashtag #IAmIngrid that went viral unintentionally, which makes her happy. The thing with social media is that it affects your social and mental health. And once you become addicted, it could damage both ways.

Nick: Body 1

In Ingrid Goes West, social media is the main point of conflict within the movie and shows how addiction to social media can result in a loss of social health. Social media is a channel to present yourself in a light where people will think of you in the way you wish to be thought of. At the same time this desire has the tendency to create the image of a perfect life, creating envy and morphing life into a race to be “liked” by your following. Ingrid in seeing a seeming life of perfection in Taylor Sloane, she takes her inheritance, $60,000, and travels to Los Angeles to follow her idol. Throughout the movie Ingrid continuously gets into trouble because of her need to follow the perfect lives of her social media idols. Her extreme devotion to this goal results in her downfall when Taylor’s brother, Nicky, finds out about her extreme obsession with his sister. Using this obsession as blackmail Ingrid finds herself in a bad situation and friendless. Her perfect “friends” having abandoned her, with only her real friend, Dan. Thus showing how her social health was ruined by her addiction to social media.

Fira:

In this movie, Ingrid’s mental health is heavily affected by her obsession to social media and plays a significant role in her decision making process. Her tendencies to stalk people on social media, especially on Instagram, is so deep-rooted that even after being discharged from a mental institution and denied all kind of mobile access, her thoughts went instantly back to her old habit. This proves to further harm her mental health as all she could find is people whose lives are way better than hers. This has long to be considered as a harmful activity, as it tends to make us feel insecure of our uneventful and dull lives compared to those we find on social media, living their lives to the fullest. Ingrid is no exception to this negative effect. She went to such lengths like moving to LA, kidnapping a dog, faking a relationship, and even faking her personality to get what she wanted. In the end, however, it backfire. Taylor, who Ingrid desperately sticks to, turns her back on her. She eventually runs out of money. Ingrid then developed depression. What might have started as a hobby of scrolling through Instagram to a tendency to stalk on people’s lives, Ingrid was lead to try and commit suicide.

Agharid:

In conclusion this movie reminds us that social media isn’t everything and isn’t something we should concern with. And also it teaches us not to be toxic towards people we could learn from the movie that people needs some privacy in their life. And becoming an instagram famous is actually a serious case. Because when people start to make money from likes or from instagram it was the moment when they start to unconciously feel depressed or stressed when they didn’t gain lots of impressions. It also teaches us to just be real and not faking life in the social media once, you get caught that your life in the social media isn’t the life you live in the reality. The movie persuades people to just be their self thus copying someone habits is also dangerous as we can see the big example is in the movie. As a instagram famous Ingrid shouldn't just rely and focus with her one and only source of money, because she should realise that there will be the downtime of her fame. The impact is that she finally ran out of money and commits suicide, she is just so lucky that people notice her video so that she got empowering and she feel loved.
